Elric was a fantasy character who wielded a cursed sword, covered in mystic runes.

I designed the book cover to reflect mystic runes, but also be readable as a title (though it might take a little work.) It’s one of my favorite typography pieces I did for Norwescon.

Norwescon 36 featured artist guest of honor Lee Moyer. While I normally used horizontal pieces for a wrap-around cover, Lee had painted two strong companion pieces which I ended up using, instead.

Lee is a graphically oriented artist, meaning a lot of his work is designed to work around and with text. He often adds text or border elements of his own. The mirrored images made mirroring text treatments easy, and unintrusive.

Norwescon 35 featured John Picacio, and was one of my first instances of using the logo to the far right (see Norwescon 37, above.) In this case, John’s art had a lot energy and movement, so I needed the text to be a calm spot for the eye.

Stacking the wordmark allowed the text to fit comfortably in the lower corner, staying out of the way of the art itself.

Norwescon 34 artist guest of honor was Kinuko Y. Craft, which was my first attempt at the far right, vertical text treatment seen on the two covers above.

It definitely is the least successful, in my opinion. There is too much contrast in the title weight versus the text underneath it. Or, I should say, the wordmark overpowers the art, in both brightness and thickness. It should have been smaller, tucked more into the right corner… probably even stacked, like Norwescon 35, above.

The title was designed in Adobe Illustrator, with layout and lower typography designed in Indesign.

Norwescon is a local (Seattle) science-fiction and fantasy convention that’s been going on since the early 1978.
